If basketball fever had fans breaking out into a cold sweat, Mullins varsity basketball Head Coach Mark Gerald provided the cure — a jamboree.
The Mullins High School gym reached capacity as teams, and their fans, came from across the Pee Dee to unveil their 2007-08 squads in two quarters of exhibition play.
The jamboree got started with the Dillon Wildcats and Hemingway Tigers facing-off in a close contest.
Tigers coach Barry McFadden and his team brought their intense full-court pressure defense, while Alyn McRea and Lashay Page showcased the potent offense expected from the “Nasty Cats,” pulling ahead 38-34 as time expired.
Coach Pete Ellis and the Swamp Foxes stepped onto the floor to face Conway in the following game, getting a big lift from Carlton Brown.
Thomas Ocean’s perimeter shooting was on display, with the guard knocking one down from NBA range.
Marlboro County carved through the Latta Viking’s defense and came away with a number of turnovers on the strength of their pressure on the basketball.
The Bulldogs ran away with a 22-9, score in the opening quarter, and cruised through the half.
The main event of the night wasn’t a disappointment for the home crowd, as the Aucs “cranked that jumpshot,” shooting efficiently — showcasing the offensive explosion most fans have known the team is capable of. However, the defense was the biggest factor in the game against the Wilson Tigers.
Qwan McFarland was a force on defensive end, while Andrew Crawford went wild inside. The game’s highlight was provided by a rim rattling dunk from Eric Smith.
Before that, eighth grade guard Darnell Coleman, made his varsity debut, flushing one down on the head of a Wilson defender in the 44-point barrage.
