Junior forward Clemente Martin scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday to lead Newberry College to a 76-66 win over Francis Marion University in men’s college basketball action.
Junior Ziyadah Carter and Houston Power paced the FMU (3-1) attack with 12 points apiece.
Martin eclipsed his career high of 27 points set earlier in the week, while nailing 11 of 15 shots from the floor.
Guard Grant Domsic came off the Newberry bench to tally 17 points, including four three-pointers, while Stephane Bakinde added 11 points and seven rebounds as the Indians evened their record at 2-2.
Francis Marion held a 27-19 lead following a three-point play by point guard Crayton Jones with 3:11 left before halftime. Newberry then outscored the Patriots 16-5 to close the stanza and carried a 35-32 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
Francis Marion was outrebounded 43-29 and the Indians held a 16-7 advantage in second-chance points.
FMU women crush Builders
FLORENCE — Senior guard Brittany Young’s 16 points paced six players in double figures Saturday as Francis Marion downed The Apprentice School 115-52.
Following Young was Ebony Allen with 13 points, Evelyn Ruff 11, YaRiah Bell 10, Shannon Singleton-Bates 10, and Kirby Marsh 10. The 5-6 Young also led FMU with nine rebounds, while handing out five assists.
Francis Marion improved to 3-0 while eclipsing the 100-point mark for the second consecutive game, a first since the 1987-88 season.
Also for the second straight game, 14 Patriots cracked the scoring column.
