Player Perspective: "This year we’re just trying to get all of the young guys to step-up to the plate. We don't have any big men, so we have to give them courage," says D.J. Gause, adding the game plan is to use their speed with high intensity pressure defense in an effort to weaken their opponent's stamina. "I'm ready for the season, this year I plan on doing my thing," says Kenny Reynolds, one of six seniors on the team.
Marion Head Coach Pete Ellis: "I believe we're faster than last year. We got six senior guards, all of them could start. Some will have to play some kind of a posting role. Carlton Brown might have to play a four, but he can do it. He's strong enough, and what he what he lacks in height, he makes up for in speed and strength,” Ellis said. Moore, Graves, Washington, Johnson and Brown will fill the need inside. "What we lose in height, we have to make up for in speed and hustle." The third year head coach will be counting on his younger players early and often this season. “The biggest thing I've notice, is that we have to rely on some young kids this year. They're going to make some mistakes but they may make some plays for us. The experienced players have been good for us, providing leadership. They're telling the kids where to go, directing traffic and coaching on the floor for me. Little nuances of our defense that only three year players would know, they're putting our kids in that position to give them a chance. I feel like I'm defiantly starting a program here, when my seniors know what to teach the younger guys, now we're leaving legacy's,” he said.
Gameplan: “We're going to have to shoot it a little bit. I don't know how that's going to go, and I may not like to see it all the time, but for us to get a chance we're probably going to have to let it rip. The biggest gameplan is to keep everyone else from scoring. We going to really have to scratch and claw this year."
Foxes Report: Coach Pete Ellis revamps his squad after an outstanding 2006-2007 campaign. Newcomers will see plenty of action, but the experience of point guard D.J. Gause and Carlton Brown will keep the team in contention. Brown can shoot at a high percentage, while the speedy Gause will be leading the Foxes transition attack for a third season.
Kenny Reynolds and Thomas Ocean will look to step-up their roles. Meanwhile, Dillon transfer Mike Myers will make an immediate impact with his varsity experience and all-around skill. Myers has a high basketball IQ, and is a fiery athlete that attacks the defense. Freshman
Justin Gause appears to be the impact player after leading the junior varsity team in scoring with an 18-point per game average. The explosive guard has the athletic ability to be a major asset offensively. D.J. Rowell is another talented freshman that should contribute, while James Graves and Quinton Washington will be called to add a presence inside.
