Silver Foxes get rematch with Bears

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It was a play that will live on in Carvers Bay football lore — and one that will live in infamy for the Lamar Silver Foxes.

Michael Linnen’s 73-yard touchdown pass to Cleveland Britton with 1:31 left proved to be the difference in last year’s Class A Division I lower state title game at Donald R. Poole Stadium.

The Bears went on to win  the game their second state championship, while the Silver Foxes were sent home without reaching the title game for just the third time in their last seven seasons.

A year later, the Silver Foxes get another shot at the Bears today with a trip to Orangeburg again in the balance.

“It’s always tough to lose a game at the end like that,” Lamar coach Charlie Poole said. “A lot of people what to talk about revenge and things like that, but our main focus has just been preparing our kids to execute the game plan we feel will make us successful. Our kids know they’ve got to play the full 48 minutes.

“You can’t get too caught up in worrying about other things.”

The Silver Foxes have other things to worry about, namely the Bears’ defense, which has accumulated 36 sacks, 12 interceptions and forced 21 fumbles.

“The defense works well together and they feed off each other,” Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson said. “We’re probably not as fast as we were last year, but we’re a lot bigger and can pound a little better.”

The Bear’s defensive line, led by Dyrell Porcha and Kwame Geathers, has wreaked havoc on opposing quarterbacks, allowing Carvers Bay’s linebackers and secondary to make plays elsewhere.

“Every team we’ve watched on film has had fits with them,” Poole said. “The offensive line has put in a lot of overtime this week working on pass protection and making sure we stay on our blocks.”

On offense, the Bears are once again led by the top rusher in the Pee Dee, Johnathan Holmes, and have seen improved play from their passing game as of late.

“(Holmes) and Scott have been a big one-two punch for them, so we just have to get 11 hats to the ball and continue our pursuits.”

Lamar offers a unique challenge to Bears on offense. The Silver Foxes have been one of the most balanced teams all season. Quarterback Tyler Boyd has been a dual threat, Kenneth Zimmon has pulled down 46 passes and Jonathan Dargan is close to breaking the 1,000-yard rushing plateau.

“They’re very potent on offense,” Thompson said. “They’ll spread you out an throw the ball and also get in the wishbone and run straight at you, so you have to be prepared for both, and you can’t take one or the other lightly.”
