Jack Leasure's senior year is shaping up to be more like his sophomore year than his junior year. After scoring a career-high 34 points in CCU's first win, Leasure scores 33 points in Coastal's 85-76 defeat of Campbell Tuesday.
The Chanticleers are 2-0 for the first time since the 1992-93 season.After exchanging baskets to open the game, Coastal slowly built a lead, getting up 16-9 on the visitors just over five minutes gone in the game. The visiting Camels scored the next six points to trim the margin to just one at 16-15. The Chants then slowly built the advantage throughout the remainder of the first half, getting it as his as 10 at 43-33 with one minute left, with a late Campbell bucket sending CCU to the halftime break with a 43-35 advantage.
The Chants the grew the margin back to 11 immediately on a Jack Leasure three to make it 46-35. Campbell fought back and cut it to 60-57 with 8:22 to go in the game, but Leasure scored the next five points to lead Coatal on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to grab control of the game 73-57 with 4:14 to play. The lead grew to as many as 19 at 78-59 and was 17 with 22 seconds to go until a late Camel flurry cut the game to its final margin.
Coastal shot above the 50-percent mark for the second consecutive game, hitting 57.1 percent (28-for-49) from the field and knocking down 10-for-18 shots (55.6 percent) from the three-point arc. Campbell shot 46.2 percent (30-for-65) on field goals and just 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from the three-point arc. CCU took advantage of the free-throw line, canning 19-of-28 chances (67.9 percent), while visiting CU was just 8-for-18 (44.4 percent). Campbell held a slight advantage on the glass, 37-34.
Leasure led all scorers with 33 points, tying the second most in his career, while he also moved into second place in Big South Conference history in three-pointers, a total that now stands at 314. The senior guard hit on 9-of-12 field goal attempts and 6-of-9 on three-pointers, while adding five assists, three rebounds and one steal. Senior guard Everage Richardson and junior guard Steven Sexton each chipped in 12, while junior forward Joseph Harris had six points, nine rebounds and four steals to go with career-high tying totals four assists and three blocked shots.
Campbell was led by Rodriguez with a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds. Ruell Pringle and Reggie Bishop chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Coastal now hits the road to the Buckeye state for pair of contests, taking on Cincinnati, Nov. 16, and Wright State, Nov. 19.
