FLORENCE — The Francis Marion volleyball team will open play in the 17th annual Peach Belt Conference against rival UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lander University.
Admission to the single-elimination tournament is free. Live stats will be available through www.peachbeltconference.org and www.landerbearcats.com.
The tournament begins Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with Armstrong Atlantic State (16-19 record) playing Augusta State (16-18). The two semifinal matches follow FMU (13-20) and UNC Pembroke (20-16) at 5 and
7 p.m. The championship match is 2 p.m. Sunday.
If FMU wins its opening match, the Patriots would face top-seeded USC Aiken (24-4) in the second semifinal match.
After opening the season 4-13, Francis Marion has won nine of its last 16 contests. Junior hitter Jessica Lombardi leads the conference with 481 kills, 45 shy of 1,000 for her career. She is fourth in the PBC in service aces per game and 15th in digs per game. Senior hitter Jackie Pheil is ninth in the conference in kills per game and 10th in digs per game. She is fifth on the PBC’s career list with 1,680 digs, second in team history.
The Patriots split the season series with Pembroke, including a three-game sweep by FMU last weekend in Florence. Francis Marion leads the series 36-25. Francis Marion owns an all-time record of 20-17 in PBC tournament play, including winning the 1997, 1998 and 2005 tournament titles.
The winner of the PBC tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
FMU freshman earns All-Region honors
FLORENCE — Francis Marion freshman forward Juan Rivas has been named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team.
Rivas was selected to the 11-member second team and is one of only five freshmen to garner All-Region recognition.
A native of Clearwater, Fla., Rivas led the Patriots in scoring with 23 points on nine goals and five assists. He took 24 shots, 17 of which were on goal. He also tallied two match-winning scores. Despite missing the final four matches of the year with an injury, he ranks sixth in the Peach Belt Conference in goals scored and seventh in points and assists.
