The Marion girls basketball team jumped out to an 18-5 first period lead, then held off a furious fourth quarter push by the Dillon Lady Wildcat’s en route to a 56-48, win Friday night in Marion.
The first period saw the Foxes take a 15-1 advantage as Dillon struggled with the Marion defensive pressure. Genekia Brantley and Rhodi Gause were the catalyst for extending the Swamp Foxes early lead. Brantley connected on a basket in the low post and was fouled in the act. She made the free throw to put the home team ahead 14 with under two and a half minutes to play in the first. Shaquita Taylor then drove coast-to-coast for a basket and she was fouled on the play. She made the free throw and Marion led 18-3. Dillon scored the final three points of the quarter but still trailed by 13 after one complete.

After a three point bucket by Chelsea Frazier cut the Marion lead to nine points, the teams would go end-to-end, exchanging baskets for several minutes. Taylor fed Gause for a bucket. Gause then returned the courtesy and dished to Taylor for two more to extend the Foxes lead to 28-13, with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
Two straight baskets by Brantley, one on a dish from Taylor, helped Marion offset a six point run by Dillon to give the Foxes a 36-19, lead with 1:37 to play. Marion would end the first half scoring on a free throw by Gause and a steal and score by Amira Timmons. Marion would hold a 41-19, spread at the half.

Dillon would outscore Marion 11-5 the rest of the way but still trailed 48-33 after three complete.
In the fourth, the combination of Gause, Taylor and Brantley helped Marion extend their lead to 17 with 4:52 to play in the game. Led by Valetta Richardson, Dillon made a move. After two free throws and a steal and score by Amber Timmons, Lontisha German hit from three point range and Richardson hit on a coast0coast drive to cut the Marion lead to 10 with inside of 30 seconds to play. Marion was able to milk the clock to get their third victory of the season.
