FLORENCE – Florence-native Harry Carson has done what few Americans have, and even fewer Florentines have: He not only played in the NFL, he excelled at it … so much so that he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
So, Mike Timmons wants to know, “When will the city of Florence recognize Harry Carson’s NFL Hall of Fame career by giving him a street or park or exit ramp? Maybe they could place signs on the major highways like I-95 or I-20 letting travelers know this is the birthplace of an NFL Hall of Famer.” He says, “We are proud of Harry and now is the time to do this.”
Florence has recognized the New York Giants linebacker by inducting him into the first class of the “Chick-Fil-A Florence Athletic Hall of Fame,” which is displayed at the Florence Civic Center. That happened the same year he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
But in order for something in the city to be named in his honor, there must be a formal request submitted.
Chuck Pope with the Florence Parks and Beautification Department said the board doesn’t name a field or park after someone without a request. If one is submitted and has support, the board of the Parks and Beautification Department will review it and decide whether to pass it along to Florence City Council for consideration.
If the request gets to that point, Council will then discuss and approve/deny the request.
