Sarah Bozarth is one person who has put aside pretty much every excuse when it comes to volunteering.
She’s 89-years-old, and while many would’ve given up any extracurricular activities 20 years before that age, Bozarth keeps going with the energy and vitality of a teenager. She spent the past 16 years volunteering at
Bozarth first came in contact with the hospital when her husband fell ill and went under a doctor’s care. After her husband died, Bozarth felt so thankful to the staff at the facility for the care they showed during her husband’s time there that she told them she’d do whatever it took to repay their kindness.
“I told them I would not sit at the front desk though, I needed to be busy,” Bozarth said. Hospital staff gladly accepted her offer, and put the spirited senior to good use. Over the next several years, Bozarth worked in various departments including administration, medical records, accounting and human resources.
Those who’ve worked alongside her say she goes well beyond their expectations to help others. “She was just so willing to help out in any department that needed her and never complained, and we should all learn from Sarah, how to give from the heart and never expect anything in return,” said Alice Todd,
What’s most interesting about Bozarth is not only her age, but the fact that her age has almost no bearing on her desire and willingness to help others.
“I’ve worked all my life and have had three jobs all my life, since I was 12… and I need to be busy and to have something that I can look forward to the next day,” said Bozarth.
Fellow staff members at the hospital say they look forward to Bozarth’s visits each day, and the smiles and kindness she brings to every task. “She is 89 years old and you would never believe it, never in a million years would you believe it,” said Todd.
Bozarth says though her age may one day play a factor in her ability to volunteer, she’ll continue to do what she can, for as long as she can, to make a difference in this world. “As long as I can move and can hear and can see, I think I’ll be here,” said Bozarth.
