USC notebook: Rivalry makes believer out of N.C. native Boyd

Being a North Carolina native, South Carolina tight end Andy Boyd didn?t at first know what all the hoopla was about when it came to the rivalry between the Gamecocks and Clemson. When he experienced his first game between the two, he kind of figured out what everybody had been talking about ? the rivalry might not usually mean much from a national standpoint, but for Palmetto State natives, it?s a different story.

CCU Runner Earns National Honors

Coastal senior Diana Jepchirchir raced her way to All-America status at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, IN. Jepchirchir finished the 6K course 29th with a time of 20:55.8. The top 30 finishers plus the top 30 Americans earn All-America honors.

With two perennial powerhouses on the field in Dillon and Cheraw, Friday?s third-round Class 2A playoff game at Meiklejohn Field left no room for error. The Braves kept their mistakes to a minimum and forced the Wildcats into more than a few of their own.

Wilson returns lower state final

The Wilson Tigers have never played for a state championship in football. But for the second straight year, they?ve earned a shot at reaching the elusive title game. On Friday night, Wilson knocked off Strom Thurmond 21-14 for a berth in next week?s Class 3A lower state championship at Crestwood.

A short runner in the lane by junior guard Houston Power with 15 seconds remaining lifted Francis Marion University to a season-opening 70-68 win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College in the Zaxby?s Peach Belt Conference/Conference Carolinas Clazzic on Friday night. After Power?s jumper Colby Poe missed a potential game-winning three-pointer with nine seconds left and FMU point guard Crayton Jones rebounded the miss.
