Marion Post 1 and pitcher Ross White picked up the 4-2 victory over Mullins Post 89 Friday at Fox Field. Marion played host to Post 89 again at Fox Field on June 22 and the team’s final meeting will take place at Mullins on July 3.

Chris Washington delivered the save, closing out the final two innings in what turned out to be a defensive struggle during the final six innings. Mullins got on the board early in the first inning thanks to runs scored by Jordan Miller and Seth Allen with runs driven in by Zach Allen and Kody Stephens.

After taking a 2-0 lead, Marion countered in the bottom of the inning. A double batted by Jonathan Elliott generated runs scored by Washington and C.J. Hopkins. Elliott had hit for two doubles in the game. An RBI single from Justin Elvis provided Post 1 with the 4-2 advantage in the third inning, but it was Post 89 with the “Web Gem” double play to end the inning.

On the mound, Washington got Marion out of the bases loaded jam, sending batters back to the dugout on three consecutive strikeouts. The Marion pitchers, White and Washington combined for 10 strikeouts in the game. Post 89 pitcher Miller was sharp on the mound also.

Mullins followed up with two victories against Marlboro County.

The two teams faced off again at Fox Field on June 22. After a defensive battle that featured five scoreless innings, Post 5 took a four run lead in the bottom of the inning. However, Post 89 rallied and took advantage of defensive errors in the sixth inning with a 6-4 advantage.

Slugger Jonathan Elliott secured the go-ahead runs with a grand slam homer, giving Marion a 9-6 lead. Justin Gause also added a home run for Marion and Mullins managed to add two additional runs in a 9-8 final.

Marion followed up with another close shave, defeating Cheraw 8-6 at home the following night. Gause batted 3-for-4 with a highlight triple in the game, while Ross White and Justin Elvis added two base hits apiece. Pitcher Chris Washington continues to dazzle with a complete game victory that included 14 strikeouts.

Storm Page and the Marion Post 5 squad complete the run through the week with a 14-2 blowout over Wilson.
