Coastal students up for top honors in NASCAR Kinetics program
The Sprint Cup championship won’t be the only thing crowned this week in Homestead, Fla. Three colleges, including Coastal Carolina, will be vying for the title as part of the NASCAR Kinetics program.

France Sr. and Jr., Petty, Johnson, Earnhardt to enter NASCAR Hall of Fame
Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr. and Junior Johnson were chosen today as the first five selections for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The announcement was made in downtown Charlotte, where the Hall of Fame will open in May 2010 and honor the all-time greats of the sport.

Southern 500 tickets go on sale Saturday
Tickets for the 2010 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway go on-sale to the public Saturday. The famed 500-mile race will once again take place on Saturday night of Mother’s Day weekend and will be preceded by the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 on Friday evening.

Johnson hopes racing festival becomes big deal
It’s no secret who Junior Johnson is pulling for in the Chase for the Championship. The North Carolina native definitely is behind the 50-year-old Mark Martin, who is attempting to be the oldest Cup champion. “Seeing a guy at his age doing what he is doing is unbelievable,” Johnson said Friday on the eve of the Darlington Historic Racing Festival. “I hope he wins the championship.”

Vickers in, Busch out of Chase
Denny Hamlin suffered his fair share of heartbreak at Richmond International Raceway, the home track where he so desperately wanted a win.
He finally got it Saturday night, but the victory celebration was muted. Kyle Busch, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, fell eight points short of making the Chase for the championship in the tightest deciding race since the format was launched in 2004.

Race is on to put package together for Patrick

Four guys are in the Chase for the Championship. Ten others are sweating it out. Kasey Kahne greatly improved his chances of making the season-ending Chase with a victory Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, pulling away from Kevin Harvick after a fortunate yellow flag late in the race.

Former NASCAR champion Bobby Labonte won’t race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his best track, because of sponsorship issues at Yates Racing.
Childress again says Harvick will be back in 2010
Team owner Richard Childress says Kevin Harvick will be back in his car next season despite nonstop rumors to the contrary. It’s the second time in two months that Childress has publicly had to address speculation about Harvick’s future with the team. Winless since the 2007 season-opening Daytona 500, Harvick is mired in the worst slump of his career.

Rutherford to appear at Darlington Historic Festival
Open-wheel racing legend Johnny Rutherford has signed on to be a featured guest at the upcoming Darlington Historic Racing Festival presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts.
Rutherford, a three-time Indianapolis 500 Champion, will participate in a question and answer session and autograph session with fans Sept. 26.

Martin wins frantic finish
Mark Martin won at Chicagoland Speedway, getting the strong jump off the double-file restart with two laps left to win his series-high fourth race of the season.
The 50-year-old Martin led 195 laps on Saturday night, the most at the 400-mile race. He dominated most of the early part of the race until he dropped the lead to Jimmie Johnson with just over 40 laps left.
