Wilmington whips RedWolves

WILMINGTON, N.C. — If any place has been unkind to the Florence RedWolves this season, it’s the road.

That was the case Friday night, where Wilmington had a pair of three-run innings and took advantage of four Florence errors to beat the RedWolves 11-3.

Five of Florence’s six losses this season have now come on the road, and the RedWolves have lost two of their last three games.

“We definitely played poorly,” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “We were not adequately prepared to play mentally and it showed from the first batter to the last.”

Davis is hoping a return tonight to American Legion Stadium will be better for his team. Wilmington is at Florence tonight at 7:30.

“Typically we consider ourselves a real good team at home,” Davis said. “I’d like to think we’ll be prepared. But we’ve got to find a way to start being a little better prepared on the road.”

Barrett Kleinknecht took the loss for Florence (19-6), giving up nine hits and seven runs — three earned — in 4 2/3 innings with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Jamie Walczak, Myckie Lugbauer and John Davis each had two hits for Florence.

Kolby Epley was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI for the Sharks (13-13), while Ben Kline was 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI for the Sharks.

Matt Freeman picked up the win, giving up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
