FLORENCE — Talk about immediate action.

Florence picked up Ali Williams on Friday, then he pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win as the RedWolves beat Columbia 2-1 in Coastal Plain League baseball at Legion Field.

The RedWolves tied the game 1-1 in the seventh when Zach Caldwell scored on a ground out by Tyler Burnett, then took the lead in the eighth inning when Columbia starter Tyler Christman balked in Herman Petzhold, who had singled to lead off the inning.

Williams did the rest.

“A win’s a win, but that was a tough break for (Christman),” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “He threw a terrific game.”

Williams, a Sumter native, spent the last two years at USC Salkehatchie and is headed for Charleston Southern in the fall, Davis said.

“We’re just glad to be able to get him on our club this soon and that he could come and help us immediately,” Davis said. “He was very mature about his arrival and was terrific for us.”

Florence is at Fayetteville at 7 tonight.
