COLUMBIA — The Columbia Blowfish touched Florence starter Ali Williams for four runs in the third inning and cruised to an 8-3 Coastal Plain League win on Thursday night.

Columbia’s big blow in the third came with runners at first and second and two out.

A single to right by John Long and an error on the play by Florence right fielder Austin Smetana scored both runners for a 4-1 Columbia lead.

Williams (1-1) lasted six innings, gave up nine hits, six runs (five earned), walked one and struck out four.

Former RedWolves pitcher Tyler McBride (2-3) got the win. In 5 2/3 innings, he gave up five hits, three runs (one earned), walked four and struck out five.

The RedWolves’ Barrett Kleinknecht was 3-for-4 with two doubles while Steven Neff finished 2-for-4.

The RedWolves host a doubleheader with Columbia today at 6 p.m.

Home run derby

Kleinknecht and Florence outfielder Sam DiMatteo have been selected to participate in the Coastal Plain League’s All-Star Game home run derby in Wilmington on Monday night.

Kleinknecht, last year’s derby champion, leads the RedWolves with six home runs while DiMatteo is tied for second with five.
