Big inning dooms Pelicans
Giving up seven runs is not good for an entire game. So giving up seven runs in one inning is pretty awful. The Pelicans surrendered the touchdown plus the extra point in the bottom of the sixth, in an 11-2 beatdown to the Hillcats.
The Hillcats raced to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Ryne Reynoso. Kent Sakamoto led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Jared Keel, Kris Watts laced a grounder back up the box to score Sakamoto. Later in the inning with Watts now at second, James Barksdale hit a soft liner to left field to score Watts.
The flood gates opened wide as the Hillcats plated seven runs against reliever Tyler Wilson in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at second and third and only one out, Jamie Romak blistered a double off the wall in center to score both James Barksdale and Angel Gonzalez. Later in the inning, Barksdale roped a bases-clearing triple to right-center field to cap the elongated frame. The Hillcats sent a total of 11 batters to the plate and recorded four hits.
The Pelicans finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. Gorkys Hernandez doubled to left field to lead off the inning. Willie Cabrera then hit a liner through the alley in right-center to score Hernandez. Following an Eric Campbell singled that moved Cabrera to third, Tyler Flowers scorched an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center field to cut the deficit to 9-2.
Pelicans starter Ryne Reynoso was solid in a short four inning outing. He allowed just four hits and two runs, while striking out seven and walking just one. Lynchburg starter Tony Watson turned in his best outing of the season, earning the win in six outstanding innings. Watson also struck out seven and walked only one batter. Kevin Roberts picked up a three-inning save.
The Pelicans don’t play another game until June 26th when they welcome in the Potomac Nationals for a three-game series.
