Talk about immediate action. Florence picked up Ali Williams on Friday, then he pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win as the RedWolves beat Columbia 2-1 in Coastal Plain League baseball at Legion Field.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs rallied late for three runs to defeat the Florence RedWolves 6-4 in Coastal Plain League play on Thursday night. The loss drops Florence a game back of Fayetteville for first place in the CPL South.

Barrett Kleinknecht deserved better. Not a pitcher by trade, Kleinknecht gave the Florence RedWolves eight stellar innings on the mound Wednesday night. The RedWolves’ offense, though, left 15 runners on base, resulting in a 3-1 loss to the Wilson Tobs and no decision for Kleinknecht.

The Florence RedWolves defeat the Wilmington Sharks for their fourth straight Coastal Plain League win.

Pelicans, Hillcats to take double dip Tuesday

The Carolina League has announced that the Pelicans and Lynchburg Hillcats will play a doubleheader on June 16 as a makeup date for a game rained out in Lynchburg in early May.  The Pelicans’ Dollar Hot Dog Night promotion has been expanded to include both games on that Tuesday evening.

The South Division of the Coastal Plain League has a pretty quick elevator. After being near the ground floor just a few days ago, the RedWolves zipped back to the top with a 5-2 win over the Fayetteville SwampDogs at Legion Field on Monday night.

Extra innings yield Pelicans win

Myrtle Beach salvaged the series finale of the three-game set with a 12-inning 5-2 win at Lewis-Gale Field on Monday. The Pelicans broke out for three runs in the top of the 12th after it seemed both teams had saved all their drama for the ninth.

Wes Davis’ first year in Division I baseball turned out to be better than perhaps he expected.
Serving as an assistant coach at Oral Roberts, the 27-year-old Florence RedWolves skipper helped the Golden Eagles to an NCAA regional appearance in Tempe, Ariz., May 29-31.
The Golden Eagles went 2-2 in the regional and were eliminated by Arizona State.

Pelicans split with Nationals

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans split a doubleheader with Potomac on Saturday, holding on to win the first game 7-6 before dropping the second game 5-3.
In the first game, the Pelicans scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 7-2 lead. They needed every run as the Nationals scored four in the bottom half of the inning before Myrtle Beach shut the door.

RedWolves can’t come up with big hits

Every hit counts. But none more so than those with runners in scoring position.
On Saturday night, the Florence RedWolves left double digit men on base for the third straight game in an 8-2 Coastal Plain League loss to the Wilmington Sharks in front of 2,230 fans at Legion Field.
After starting the season 5-0, the RedWolves have lost their last three games. In those three losses, they’ve stranded 36 runners, including 10 against Wilmington.

Hartsville’s Lyles fans 11

Lexington pitcher Jordan Lyles struck out a season-high 11 in six innings but got a no-decision in the Legends’ 2-1 victory over Greenville in South Atlantic League action Friday.

Tobs shut out RedWolves

Matt Johns’ RBI single in the bottom of the fifth was the difference as Wilson defeated Florence 1-0 on Friday in Coastal Plain League action. The loss over shadowed a strong pitching performance by Florence’s Matt Jebb.

Phantoms head to Fayetteville needing a win

With only four games left in the season, the Florence Phantoms are almost starting from scratch. The Phantoms have lost nine starters, including quarterback Omar Jacobs, and his top target, A.J. Bennett, because of injuries and various reasons during the last month.

They treated him to a pre-game parachute team. Nine runs in the first two innings. And a post-game fireworks display.
