Lost firepower shows for Pelicans vs. Red Sox

The Pelicans lost three of their best players on Friday afternoon.  It did not take long to show they will be missed.  Outfielder Jason Heyward, first baseman Freddie Freeman, and closer Tommy Palica were called up to Double A Mississippi.  Then a few hours later, the Pelicans were smoked by the Red Sox.

Benji Johnson homered, and Cody Johnson crushed a Grand Slam to lead Myrtle Beach to an 8-1 victory over Salem on Thursday night.

RedWolves’ pitching baffles Blowfish again

Florence’s pitching stifled Columbia again on Thursday in the RedWolves’ 3-2 win at Legion Field. The Blowfish (1-2 second half) have now scored 14 runs in seven games — six losses — against Florence (2-1).

Pelicans earn split with Kinston

After losing a game Tuesday night in the later innings, the bullpen stepped up for the Pelicans on Wednesday.  The Birds shut out Kinston over the final four innings, allowing Myrtle Beach to pick up a 6-5 win in 10 innings over Kinston.

RedWolves get best of SwampDogs

After facing just one batter Tuesday night, Florence RedWolves right-hander John Taylor looked as if he might be on the way to his worst outing of the summer. But after giving up a lead-off home run to Jared Humphreys and a one-out single to Brendan Rowland in the first inning, Taylor held the Fayetteville SwampDogs hitless through the sixth en route to a 9-4 win at Legion Field.

On those nights, they smacked the ball to all fields and fielded it well to back a pitching staff that was on most every night.

Phantoms drop finale

Quarterback Kevin Mason threw for three touchdowns as the Erie River Rats defeated the Florence Phantoms 60-20 in the season finale for both teams.
Florence (6-8) finishes the season with seven consecutive losses a year after winning the AIFA Championship.

Homers carry RedWolves

Barrett Kleinknecht and Steven Neff each homered and drove in five runs as the Florence RedWolves defeated Wilmington for the second straight night 15-7 on Saturday at American Legion Field.
Florence finishes the first half with a 15-13 record.

Steven Neff had three hits and Stephen McRay pitched seven strong innings as the Florence RedWolves defeated Wilmington 9-3 on Friday night.

Fayetteville scored six runs in the first two innings en route to an 8-5 win over Florence on Saturday in a battle for the top spot in the Coastal Plain League’s South Division.

Relentless Keys hammer Pelicans 11-2

As the great Vin Scully would say, it was deuces wild in the opener of a four-game set for the Pelicans and Frederick Keys at BB&T Coastal Field. Unfortunately for Myrtle Beach, the vast majority of twos resided on top line of the scoreboard.
