Phantoms look for top seed

During their six-game winning streak, the Florence Phantoms have punished their opponents on both sides of the ball.
For the season, the Phantoms have outscored their opponents 47-31 on average, and they will put everything on the line tonight when they head to Concord, N.C. to face Carolina in the regular-season finale.
A win over the Speed coupled with a Reading loss to Baltimore Monday night will give Florence (9-4) home field advantage throughout the American Indoor Football Association playoffs.

RedWolves use eight-run third to beat up on Gastonia

After scoring six runs in the sixth inning of Monday’s win over rival Fayetteville, Florence looked for an encore when it welcomed Gastonia to Legion Field on Tuesday.
The RedWolves did two better against the Grizzlies. Florence put up eight unearned runs in the third inning en route to blasting Gastonia 18-2.

Grife, RedWolves stifle SwampDogs

The Fayetteville SwampDogs headed into Monday’s game against Florence on fire offensively, scoring a Coastal Plain League-record 53 runs in their last two games.
Maybe they should have saved some of those runs for Florence.
Eight days after tossing a no-hitter against the SwampDogs, Steve Grife shut down the Fayetteville offense again from the mound and benefitted from a six-run sixth inning as Florence earned a 7-1 win at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

An Avalanche of offense

The packed stands of BB&T Coastal field came for the fireworks but witnessed a shootout ending with an Avalanche 12-9 win over the Pelicans.

REDWOLVES NOTEBOOK: Pitchers making quick work of opposition

Fans at American Legion Field have come to expect quick home games from the Florence RedWolves.
In the team’s 7-0 home start, Florence has averaged less than two-and-a half hours per contest.

Jamie Walczak drove in two runs and Kent Altman pitched six strong innings as the Florence RedWolves defeated Columbia 5-1 on Saturday.
Keon Graves added three hits as Florence improved to a league-best 11-3.

Phantoms can clinch division title

It’s never too late to renew an old rivalry.
After a two-year sabbatical, the I-20 Cup will be defended when the Florence Phantoms and Augusta Colts square off tonight at the Florence Civic Center.
Augusta has taken the first three games in a series which dates back to when the Phantoms were in Myrtle Beach as a member of the World Indoor Football League.

Pelicans tie franchise record

Down 4-0 in the seventh inning, the Pelicans drove in five runs in the final three frames to steal a 5-4 win away from Salem.  Willie Cabrera hit a two run walk off single to give the Pelicans their 43rd win of the season, which equals the first half franchise record first achieved back in 2002.

No comeback this time for Pelicans

This time the Pelicans dug in a hole they couldn’t climb out of.  Myrtle Beach committed two costly errors that led to three first inning runs, and the Lynchburg Hillcats held on to a 5-2 over the home team.

RedWolves’ bats come alive against Wilmington

Through the first 10 games of the season, the Florence RedWolves have been living off their pitching.
They got strong pitching from L.A. Owens on Wednesday night. But Florence’s bats woke up in support of Owens, pounding out a season-high 15 hits in a 13-4 beating of Wilmington.

Pelicans dominate Hillcats 11-3

After winning the Southern Division title, the Pelicans had lost three straight.  Now that their championship hangover is over, they’ve reverted back to their winning ways.  Myrtle Beach dominates the Hillcats Tuesday night 11-3.

RedWolves continue to thrive off pitching

The last few games for the Florence RedWolves have featured some stellar pitching performances.
Rob Kumbatovic tossed a shutout of Wilson on Friday. Steve Grife no-hit rival Fayetteville on Sunday.
Not to be outdone Tuesday was Andre Benjamin. The lefthander held Wilmington to three hits as Florence efficiently dispatched the Sharks, 4-1 at Legion Field in just an hour and 54 minutes.

Clemson’s Moskos shuts down Pelicans

In a battle between USC and Clemson products, the Gamecock came out victorious.  But the Tiger won the war.  Travis Jones knocked a two-run homer off Daniel Moskos, but it wasn’t enough, as the Pelicans fell to the Hillcats, 5-3.

The Pelicans came to Kinston looking to clinch the first half title.  They did that on Friday - since then they’ve lost two straight.  The K-Tribe exacted a bit of revenge again, topping Myrtle Beach Sunday 5-4.

Pelicans come back, just to lose at end

The night after clinching the Southern Division title, the Pelicans almost performed an even more amazing feat.  Myrtle Beach erased a 7 run deficit to take a one run lead, only to blow it in the ninth and tenth.  The Indians took down the Birds 10-9 in 10 innings.

Pelicans earn postseason berth

The long wait has ended.  The Pelicans ended the longest playoff drought in the Carolina League, clinching the Southern Division title with an 8-5 win over Kinston.  Myrtle Beach hasn’t been in the postseason since 2002.
