Before Friday night’s meeting with Wilson, Marlboro County football coach Dean Boyd predicted the game would be a slobberknocker.
Boyd and his team got just that — and more. In front of a capacity crowd at Memorial Stadium, the Bulldogs needed two defensive stands in the final three minutes to escape with a 21-14 victory over the Tigers.

Included in that are that his defense make a couple of stops and that the offense pick up four yards each play in the Hammer offense. Against Timmonsville last week, the Eagles’ defense was up to the task.

Heading into the season, there was a rumor circulating around Pee Dee football circles that Cheraw football was down. With the loss of standouts like Travis Small, Kenyatta Gary and Montrell Evans, there was nothing to prove the rumors untrue.

South’s Humphries wins region meet

South Florence’s Matt Humphries won the Region 6-4A cross country meet individual title for the fourth straight year, helping the Bruins to a third-place finish. Carolina Forest topped the boys’ field and Sumter finished first in the girls’ competition in Wednesday’s meet in Sumter.

If the Knights lose at Darlington on Friday, the season finale against Sumter County School District Two rival Lakewood becomes as insignificant as a poncho on a scuba diver.

Carolina Forest football coach Drew Hummel said his team carried a community on its back when it took the field against South Florence on Monday. In a game that had been postponed due to the stabbing of a resource officer and subsequent shooting death of a student at Carolina Forest on Friday, the Panthers persevered on both sides of the ball.

Crestwood came up short on a late fake punt attempt and Wilson make the Knights pay dearly as Maleik McCall connected with Jeremiah Gandy on the next play for a 34-yard touchdown pass and a 15-12 win for the Tigers Friday at Sumter District 2 Memorial Stadium.

Dillon continues dominance over Marion

Since 2000, Dillon’s football team has found nothing but success against Marion. Friday night, the decade of dominance continued. The Wildcats combined a first-half outburst with stifling defense to earn their ninth consecutive victory over the Swamp Foxes, 34-12 at Fox Field.
