Title game dry spells end for Wilson, Chester

Saturday?s high school football state championships will feature a lot of fresh faces on the sidelines ? and one very familiar one. After 15 seasons at the helm of Wilson, coach Darryl Page and his Tigers are finally getting ready to play in the state championship game.

Rams get revenge, state title

A couple big special teams plays helped Carvers Bay capture last year?s Class A Division I championship against Chesterfield. In Friday?s rematch, a couple big defensive plays helped the Rams return the favor.

Braves going back to Columbia

Chilly temperatures at Meiklejohn Stadium on Friday night sent both Cheraw?s and Central?s offenses into a deep freeze for much of the game. Luckily for Cheraw, the Braves had Travis Small.

Tigers earn first title trip

For four weeks, the Wilson Tigers have capitalized on opponents? mistakes and seemingly willed themselves into the Class 3A lower state championship Friday against Crestwood. And with one Crestwood mistake and one last test of will, the Tigers now find themselves with one final destination: Columbia.

The 2006-07 basketball season is probably one that Jerry Coleman and the Pee Dee Academy Golden Eagles would probably like to wipe from their memories.

Marion Basketball Preview

Player Perspective: "This year we're just trying to get all of the young guys to step-up to the plate. We don't have any big men, so we have to give them courage," says D.J. Gause, adding the game plan is to use their speed with high intensity pressure defense in an effort to weaken their opponent's stamina.

Chesterfield-Carvers Bay stats, players to watch

Running backs key Bears, Rams

Friday?s Class A Division I state title game will be a showcase for not only the top two teams in the state, but two of the top running backs. Carvers Bay?s Johnathan Holmes and Chesterfield?s Simpson Miller have each had stellar seasons, and each has taken a different road to success. Miller has been the Rams? go-to running back in each of their two upper state championship seasons. While the Rams throw the ball a lot for a Class A team, the star tailback has provided them with a balanced attack.

Chesterfield takes long road back

Often the hardest things to live up to are other people?s expectations. The Chesterfield Rams know this better than anyone. After a state title appearance in 2006, the Rams came out of the gates strong with a 3-0 start, including a win against defending Class 2A champion Cheraw.

Wilson living life on road

Most teams would rather play at home. The Wilson Tigers, however, have road trips down to such a science, this week?s jaunt won?t seem like much. Wilson travels to Crestwood on Friday for the Class 3A lower state championship game coming off three straight road playoff wins ? all of which were played farther away from Florence than Sumter.

Braves like home cookin’

Central coach Joey Mangum knows all about his team?s next opponent. And he?s not calling that an advantage. That?s because the Eagles must travel to region and county rival Cheraw, home of the defending Class 2A state champion Braves, for Friday?s lower state championship game. Cheraw has won the teams? last four meetings, including 17-0 on Oct. 19, and the last three 2A lower state titles.

A salute to the area’s prep football programs

The few players that stood out this season is just a small scale of the talented athletes any coach would love to have. A standing ovation goes out to all the participants that wore a uniform, from varsity to small fry. It’s too easy to come up with a team that could crack the top of the prep football polls, but it’s difficult trimming down a roster for the field.

Braves defend home turf

With two perennial powerhouses on the field in Dillon and Cheraw, Friday?s third-round Class 2A playoff game at Meiklejohn Field left no room for error. The Braves kept their mistakes to a minimum and forced the Wildcats into more than a few of their own.

Wilson returns lower state final

The Wilson Tigers have never played for a state championship in football. But for the second straight year, they?ve earned a shot at reaching the elusive title game. On Friday night, Wilson knocked off Strom Thurmond 21-14 for a berth in next week?s Class 3A lower state championship at Crestwood.

Silver Foxes get rematch with Bears

It was a play that will live on in Carvers Bay football lore ? and one that will live in infamy for the Lamar Silver Foxes. Michael Linnen?s 73-yard touchdown pass to Cleveland Britton with 1:31 left proved to be the difference in last year?s Class A Division I lower state title game at Donald R. Poole Stadium.
