The Cheraw High School athletic Web site lists Tom Brewer as “the first professional athlete of merit from Cheraw.” It was only fitting then that on Saturday, the Braves renamed their baseball field after Brewer.

After leading Carolina Academy’s girls tennis team to the SCISA Class 2A state championship, Lauren Reddeck earned another piece of hardware to add to her collection. On Sunday, the senior was named SCISA player of the year in an awards ceremony held at Wilson Hall.

The ride to the Class 3A state tennis championship came to an abrupt halt for the Wilson Tigers. Undefeated heading into Friday’s lower state final, the Tigers were blanked by Hilton Head 6-0 at Lexington County Tennis Center.

New coach, same result for Johnsonville volleyball

Laura Jones and Katlyn Howell won in singles and doubles as West Florence cruised past Stratford in the opening round of the Class 4A tennis playoffs with a 7-0 win on Tuesday. The win improves the Knights’ record to 17-2 on the season.
