HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Wolverines earn matchup with Flashes

LAKE VIEW — Kristan McElveen tripled in the tying run then scored the winning run on an error in the fifth inning of Wednesday’s game as East Clarendon eliminated two-time defending Class A lower state softball champion Lake View 2-1.
The Wolverines will face Johnsonville on Friday for the Class A lower state championship. East Clarendon must win two games in order to advance to the state title series.
A solo homer by Kayla Sanderson gave Lake View an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Sanderson finished with two of the Wild Gators’ four hits.
In the fifth, Brandi Driggers singled to start the inning then moved over to second on a Sloane Welsh grounder. Two batters later, McElveen’s triple brought home Driggers, and McElveen score when the ball got by the Lake View third baseman.
Welsh struck out five and allowed four hits in a complete-game effort for E.C. to pick up the win.
Amber Suggs took the loss for Lake View, allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
