Pee Dee Academy looks to returning players as leaders
This past year’s Pee Dee Academy softball team made it farther than any had before, coming within one game of claiming the school’s first ever state SCISA crown. And, while they may not have brought home the gold, the squad has a golden opportunity to make the same run in 2009.

Three Lady Falcons sign with Columbia College

Lake View falls in bid for repeat
FLORENCE — In a series as evenly matched as the one between Chesterfield and Lake View’s softball teams, sometimes it comes down to the little things.
For Chesterfield, a little soft dribbler to the right side of the infield wound up being the Rams’ biggest play all season.
In a game that went to international tiebreaker rules (each team starts the inning with a runner on second), Emily Smith’s one-out grounder to the first baseman was just slow enough to score Lacy Rhynes from third in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chesterfield a 3-2 win and the Class A state championship.

Darlington High softball wins state championship
The varsity softball team at Darlington High School won the school’s first-ever state championship with a 3-1 victory over J.L. Mann in extra innings Wednesday night.

Gators bounce back, play on in Class A softball finals
LAKE VIEW — As Leigh Ann Shelley reached back to touch the plate, Lake View softball coach Chad Huggins said he could barely believe what he had just seen.
Huggins probably wasn’t the only one, either.
Capped by Avonlea Cooke’s two-run double, the Wild Gators managed three straight two-out hits in the bottom of seventh inning for a come-from-behind 5-4 win Wednesday against Chesterfield to knot the Class A state championship series at 1-1.
McBee softball falls in upper state championship
The varsity softball team at McBee High School faced off against region foe Chesterfield in the Class A upper state championship. Although they won game one 13-4, they fell 2-0 in the second game and ended their impressive season.
Lady Falcons win game one of state championship series
The Darlington High School varsity softball team was propelled to a 1-0 series lead over J.L. Mann in the Class AAA state championship series by Courtney Kickery’s fifth inning grand slam in game one on Monday.

Chesterfield beats Gators in seventh
CHESTERFIELD — Lake View softball coach Chad Huggins said it best:
“(Big errors) seem to have a way of evening out during a ballgame, especially a state championship.”
After taking a two-run lead on a sixth-inning throwing error, the Wild Gators committed one in the bottom of the seventh that opened the door for a 3-2 come-from-behind win by Chesterfield in game one of the Class A state championship series.
Falcons take first game from J.L. Mann
DARLINGTON — For the second time in three years, the Darlington softball team is one win from a state title.
Now the Falcons hope to finish the deal.
Courtney Kickery’s fifth-inning grand slam and Stacy Weatherford’s pitching helped Darlington to a 4-1 victory in the first game of the Class 3A state championship series on Monday.

Two softball teams from the Pee Dee punched their tickets to the state finals on Friday: the Lake View Wild Gators and the Darlington Falcons.

Lady Falcons set for rematch at lower state title game
The Lady Falcons’ varsity softball team has been ranked number one in Class AAA state nearly all year and have been pursued by opposing teams. Wednesday night, they continued their impressive play with a 2-0 victory over Brookland-Cayce to propel them into the lower state title game and a rematch with Midland Valley.

Knights finish sixth
West Florence freshman Stephen Behr fired a final-round 77 and earned all-state honors in the Class 4A golf championships. Behr finished with a three-day total of 223, which was good for third place.

Dillon softball program continues to build
Prior to last season, not too many people in Dillon could have recalled the last time the Wildcats softball team made a postseason appearance. In fact, not even a former player could remember — and she might have been the starting pitcher for that game.
