QUINBY — The Wilson Tigers defeated The Byrnes Schools 31-30 in the championship game of the first ever Florence Shootout 7-on-7 football tournament which was held at The Byrnes Schools.
In a tournament that featured all passing and no offensive lineman, the defending Class 3A state champions added another trophy to its case.
Wilson defeated South Florence to reach the championship game, while the Trojans beat Thomas Sumter.
Other teams in the Shootout were Florence Christian, Williamsburg Academy, Clarendon Hall, W.W. King and Laurence Manning.
Trojans coach Jared Amell thought the tournament was a success and added it was the first of a yearly ritual.
“Not very often do you get to see the public schools and the private schools on the same field,” he said. “It’s a great teaching for the schools, especially between our team and Wilson because we throw the ball at lot.
“Plus you get a chance to play team you wouldn’t get to see during the regular season.”
Last week, the Trojans defeated Lower Richland, Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Keenan and Weddington, N.C. to take first place in the Wilson High 7-on-7 tournament at Freedom Florence on June 14. They were the only SCISA school in the field.
