Waccamaw made the playoffs for the first time in 10 years last year.  Thanks to a change in regions, a second straight berth is going to come much harder.

Realignment has put the Warriors in a region with Timberland, Hanahan, Manning, Andrews and Kingstree.  Waccamaw now has the unenviable position of being in a region where all six teams made the playoffs the day before.  “This region is top to bottom harder than our last region with Cheraw and Dillon,“ says coach Burney Bourne.

But it’s not all bad for Bourne, who was inducted into the South Carolina Coaches Association Hall of Fame last month.  Waccamaw returns 8 starters on both sides of the ball, and will carry 15 seniors.  Bourne believes he’ll be able to two-platoon at all positions, something he hasn’t done at Waccamaw.

His best player will be Sr. running back Akeem Point, but Bourne has also been impressed by jr. quarterback Terron Britton, soph. o-lineman Jerome Maybank and linebacker Dennis Lee Smith.

While conference play will be brutal, Waccamaw has some winnable games in the middle of their schedule - vs. Hannah-Pamplico, Loris and Aynor - which could give them momentum going into the region.
