Youngsters prepare to earn their stripes
Pee Dee Academy Head Football Coach Lon Spivey looks to be competitive with another playoff team, after a seven-win season in 2007.
“We lost 12 seniors last year, which is a lot for a small school like us, but we’re going to have some young sophomores step up this season,” Spivey said. A dedicated effort during summer workouts has Spivey feeling good about his team’s willingness to respond to coaching.
Golden Eagle Charlie Fincannon returns, switching from “slotback,” (an offensive halfback who lines up behind the slot between the offensive end and tackle) to the quarterback position.
“In the past we haven’t asked much from our quarterback, but the ball is going to be in his hands this year,” Spivey said of his potential playmaker. The squad looks to attack with more of an option game with running backs Bradley George and Storm Page, he said, and sophomore Ed Pittman and T.J. Bass will anchor the offensive line.
The Golden Eagle linebacker will be free to attack the backfield this season.
“We’re hoping to put some more athletic people on the field, changing up some things to put the heat on and disrupt the offense. George, Page, Will Nanke, and open field defender Zach Smalls lead the unit.
