Foxes hope offensive weaponry will outscore opponents
“We’ve got five good running backs,” Marion High School Football Coach Bryan Carfley said.
Excited about the potential match-up troubles the Foxes can pose with their talented skill position players, Carfley said the team is prepared to spread the ball around with senior quarterback Justin Brock.
“We have more options … if we line-up our first offense across the board with our 10 players, either side we go to, we’re pretty good,” Carfley said, adding that the running game and passing game will rely more on individual playmaking ability.
Junior all-region running back and linebacker Brian Gilliard should be a force on both sides of the ball. The team leader with 130 tackles broke out late in the season as the feature ball carrier.
Justin Gause, Jacolgan Rowell, and Josh Hughes add tremendous depth to the stable, with Gause clocking sub 4.5 40-yard dash times during the summer.
Seniors Rashaun Hemingway, Russ White, and junior Deonte Johnson lead a talented receiving core.
“I think we’re a better team than we were last year, I know offensively, overall, we are better,” Carfley said.
Quentin Washington anchors the offensive and defensive line, with fellow senior Chris Grover returning at center. Kurt Rogers and sophomore Jonathan Elliott will be called upon to produce on the front lines as well.
Johnson moves from defensive end to outside linebacker, upgrading the position with a high intensity athlete that can shed blockers and cover the field with good range. Junior Jeremy Curry will play a key role at corner back.
With the addition of Cheraw to region 7-2A, the Foxes will strive to force their way into one of the four postseason spots up for grabs.
