Last year, some of the best high school football players spent a week practicing in Myrtle Beach, sleeping in Myrtle Beach, eating in Myrtle Beach, and then playing the North/South All-Star Game in Conway.  That is going to change this year.

The North/South All-Star Game is moving back to Myrtle Beach, and back to its home before Brooks Stadium.  After three years in Conway, the game will be played at Doug Shaw Stadium.  Mayor John Rhodes and South Carolina Football Coaches Association Executive Secretary Keith Richardson were at the Stadium Tuesday to make the announcement.

The stadium is going through a $4 million renovation which includes brand new turf, a Jumbotron and other amenities.  The project should be finished by August, with the game being played in January.

Doug Shaw brought the game to Myrtle Beach in 1986.  The North/South All-Star Game spent four decades in Columbia, then jumped around for a few years, before finding a home on the Grand Strand.

Mayor Rhodes says it’s just another great opportunity to put “heads in beds” in Myrtle Beach during a time of the year which can be slow for tourism.
