Going into every game, Scott’s Branch High School head football coach Leonard Johnson asks just a few simple things of his team. Included in that are that his defense make a couple of stops and that the offense pick up four yards each play in the Hammer offense. Against Timmonsville last week, the Eagles’ defense was up to the task.

Carolina Forest football coach Drew Hummel said his team carried a community on its back when it took the field against South Florence on Monday. In a game that had been postponed due to the stabbing of a resource officer and subsequent shooting death of a student at Carolina Forest on Friday, the Panthers persevered on both sides of the ball.

Crestwood came up short on a late fake punt attempt and Wilson make the Knights pay dearly as Maleik McCall connected with Jeremiah Gandy on the next play for a 34-yard touchdown pass and a 15-12 win for the Tigers Friday at Sumter District 2 Memorial Stadium.

Since 2000, Dillon’s football team has found nothing but success against Marion. Friday night, the decade of dominance continued. The Wildcats combined a first-half outburst with stifling defense to earn their ninth consecutive victory over the Swamp Foxes, 34-12 at Fox Field.

Prep football roundup: Trojans win late in key region matchup

Barrett Goodson caught at 6-yard pass from Lee Schurlknight with 55 seconds remaining, and Schurlknight ran in the 2-point conversion on a quarterback draw to help The Byrnes Schools beat W.W. King 30-29 on Friday in high school football.

South Florence, Carolina Forest football game postponed

Because of the shooting death of a student at Carolina Forest High School in Conway, the football game between Carolina Forest High and South Florence High, which was scheduled for Friday at Memorial Stadium in Florence,  has been postponed.

Ed Cox has evidently met his match. As a high school football official, he can penalize players for breaking rules or, in the most drastic situations, throw them out of a game.

Sumter routs West Florence

After his team’s 56-7 loss at the hands of Sumter, West Florence football coach Trey Woodberry huddled his players and gave them some encouraging words. It’s not an easy task rebuilding a program that lost 31 seniors from last year’s campaign, including four players who signed to continue their careers at Division I college programs.

Dillon expects tough game from Marion

The Dillon Wildcats and Marion Swamp Foxes set for key Region 8-2A clash. The Wildcats’ last official loss to Marion came in 2000. The Swamp Foxes’ 35-13 win in 2006 was forfeited because of Marion’s use of an ineligible player.

Turnovers doom South Florence in loss to Sumter

Mistakes can be a killer for any football team. For South Florence on Friday night, it was the self-inflicted ones that hurt the most against Sumter. The Bruins committed six turnovers that led to 31 points as the Gamecocks left Memorial Stadium with a 45-27 win in the Region 6-4A opener for both teams.

PREP ROUNDUP: Marion routs Aynor

Brian Gillard rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns as Marion defeated Region 8-2A foe Aynor 49-6 on Friday in high school football action.
Lue Clemmons had 104 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Marion as well.
