Martin named Myrtle Beach hoops coach
Myrtle Beach has hired a new basketball coach. Former North Central assistant coach Craig Martin was named the new head Seahawk today.
“He’s a very impressive young man,“ said Myrtle Beach athletic director Doug Terry. “He impressed principal Nona Kerr with both his expectations and vision.“
Martin coached with former Myrtle Beach head coach Chad Dickson at North Central. Dickson encouraged Martin to pursue the Seahawks job.
“The athletic tradition at the school, really for all sports, is big,“ said Martin. “There’s plenty of talent, community support is great and they have a good vision of what a student-athlete should be. Who wouldn’t want to coach there?“
This is Martin’s first varsity coaching position. Before coming to North Central he was an assistant in his home state of Michigan. He plans on brining a “Michigan State, Detroit Pistons” style of play to Myrtle Beach - one that is defense oriented, physical, and extremely aggressive.
Martin replaced DeAndre Scott, who left Myrtle Beach for Wilson High School, his alma mater. Myrtle Beach won a state championship with Scott in 2008.
North Central is a Class A school north of Columbia. NCHS lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2009.
