Mullins High School Auctioneers all-state and all-star basketball player Stacey Wilson has signed to play for Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas.

Sitting down with Aucs Head Coach Mark Gerald, his aunt Tony Sainvil and school administrators Ted Greene and Cassandra Strickland, Wilson said the agonizing decision process worked out.

“I’m excited and ready to get on campus. I like the players and the coaches.” Wilson said he visited the school a couple of weeks ago.

Averaging 20 points per game this past season, the 6’3” shooting guard has played four seasons for the Aucs, winning over 40 games in his final two season, which included a Class 2A runner-up finish and Carolina’s All-Star Classic selection.

“I’ve seen him grow in all areas, personally, academically and athletically. I’ve seen his skills just blossom. He works extremely hard, everybody likes him and I’m looking forward to some big things from him,” Gerald said, adding that Wilson is a combo guard that can play multiple positions with his versatility.

The prolific scorer has been mulling over his next move for months, fielding offers from Coastal Carolina, Radford and S.C. State.

Wilson will join a Coffeyville Ravens team coached by Jay Herkelman, a squad he considers one the best of the nation with Herkleman’s .777 winning percentage. “When I went there, it felt like I was in Mullins. Coach Herkelman was talking about academics first, we had a good talk and I decided to go,” Wilson said. He plans to study business management after high school, he added.

Coach Herkelman said he was excited to have a shooting guard that is ranked among the nation’s best at his position according to espn.com. “Stacy comes from a quality program and is prepared to play immediately at the college level. We are losing three starting guards from this year’s team, so we need him to come in and play right away,“ he said.

Wilson is waiting on his ACT test scores to arrive later this summer and said if everything goes right academically, he plans to join a NCAA Division I roster after his stint with the Ravens.

“I’m proud of him. I think he made a good decision,” Gerald said, adding that he feels Wilson can play at the next level.

“I think maybe the competition and the level of play had a lot to do with his choice,” he said.

Wilson’s coaches said they believe his ability is unlimited. “Whatever Stacy decides to do, he’ll be competitive. He’s always shown the ability to act and respond to challenges. We’re very happy for him and his family,” principal Ted Green said.

“He continues our long line of tradition. We’re just fortunate to have quality kids that we worked with that have demonstrated a certain level of excellence in both athletics and academics,” Green said, adding that under the leadership of coaches like Gerald, the tradition continues.

“We have a tradition of winning championships here at Coffeyville and I believe Stacy will help us continue in our winning ways,“ Herkelman said, adding that expects his team to contend for a ninth conference championship within a 10 year span.
