Marion girls earn title spot
As the final seconds ticked down in the Class 2A girls lower state title game, Marion coach Leon Sturkey could only think of one thing.

Pee Dee teams go 0-for-3 in SCISA semifinals
For most of Thursday’s SCISA basketball Class 2A state semifinal, Pee Dee Academy coach Jerry Coleman thought his team was right where it needed to be. Unfortunately for Pee Dee, the last part of the fourth quarter was when some of the Eagles’ bad tendencies showed up.
Darlington, Wilson girls meet for third time
Today’s Class 3A girls basketball lower state championship might be described as familiar foes in uncharted waters. Region 6-3A’s top two teams square off at Marlboro County High School at 7 p.m. for a state championship berth next week in Columbia, and both Darlington and Wilson have already made history.
Mullins boys headed to Class 2A lower state final
The Mullins boys basketball is headed back to the Class 2A lower state finals. The Auctioneers used a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter on their way to a win Wednesday night over Kingstree 76-65.

PREP ROUNDUP: Marion girls headed to lower state final
A big third quarter helped the Marion girls earn a 66-54 win over Woodland on Tuesday and advance to its first lower state championship in decades. The Swamp Foxes outscored Woodland 18-10 in the third quarter to open up what had been a close game.
Camden ends Lake City’s season
In home wins over Darlington and Swansea, Lake City had very little trouble scoring in the first two rounds of the Class 3A boys basketball playoffs, especially from 3-point range.
Falcons advance in girls 3A playoffs
With his team trailing at the start of the fourth quarter, Darlington girls basketball coach Brian Rozzelle challenged his players and called out a few by name. It was only fitting, then, that his senior captain was the one who answered the bell.

PREP ROUNDUP: Pee Dee, Trinity move on in SCISA playoffs

Basketball fans in Marion County witnessed cinematic come-from-behind victories over the weekend, when the highly anticipated postseason runs for the Mullins Auctioneers and the Lady Swamp Foxes began during this past week with each team hosting two games at home.

Eric Smith scored 28 points and dished out eight assists as Mullins rallied from an eight point halftime deficit to defeat Silver Bluff 80-72 in the second round of the boys Class 2A playoffs Saturday.

Panthers boys beat Swansea 77-62
When Lake City head basketball coach Willie Thomas’s team found themselves down by nine in the opening minutes of Friday’s second-round playoff game against Swansea, he wasn’t overly concerned, he said.

On Friday night against Swansea, Lake City looked like a team still feeling the effects of a near-collapse against Darlington on Tuesday. But the Panthers shook off their early rust in defeating Swansea 77-62 on Friday in the second of the Class 3A boys playoffs.
PREP ROUNDUP: Hemingway boys move on
Jazjuan Wilson scored 15 points and Tashan Frederick added 13 as Hemingway advanced to the third round of the Class A boys basketball playoffs with a 90-64 win over Estill on Friday.

Lake City basketball players named to All-State team
Senior point guards Desmond Haygood and Alisha Graham have been named to the 16-player 3A All-State teams, which include athletes from across the state in each classification.

Eight Lake City High School basketball players and one coach have earned postseason honors for Region VII-3A.

The Lady City High School Lady Panthers got a miracle to defeat Marlboro County in the first round of the lower state basketball playoffs, but their season ended with Thursday’s 43-38 loss to Dreher.

PREP ROUNDUP: Darlington girls cruise into third round
Kierra Patterson scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Darlington girls defeated Hilton Head in the second round of the girls Class 3A high school basketball playoffs Thursday.
Smith named region player of the year
Mullins Auctioneer point guard is awarded region 8-2A player of the year. Coach Mark Gerald named coach of the year. Additionally, Marion’s Geneika Brantly wond player of the year and Dillon coach won coach of the year in Region 8-2A.
Auctioneers advance past Manning
Mullins Head Coach Mark Gerald said he could see his team playing a little uptight in their first round playoff game against Manning. “It was a good game for us … they fought back and got in it and we had to play tough,” he said.

Donte Cooper had 18 points to lead five Mullins players in double figures as the Auctioneers defeated Manning 75-60 in the first round of the Class 2A boys basketball playoffs Wednesday.
