Edwards column: Holidays good for rest, reflection
Christmas is right around the corner, and thankfully the men?s basketball players at Francis Marion will have the opportunity to spend the holidays with their families. They have been working hard in the classroom and on the court and our players deserve to prop up their feet and enjoy some of Mom?s home cooking.

Patriots hold off persistent Cobras
After earning their first win of the season Friday night against Chowan, the Coker Cobras looked to make it two in a row against rival Francis Marion at Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium. For the first four minutes, it looked as if Coker would accomplish just that. But FMU even- tually found a rhythm and equaled its win total from last season with an 84-77 victory Saturday at the Lady Cobra Classic.
Power paces FMU men
Junior guard Houston Power scored a career-high 26 points to lead Francis Marion University to a 117-62 non-conference win over Florida Christian College on Saturday. The Patriots conclude their pre-holiday portion of their schedule with a 5-2 mark. FMU returns to action on Jan. 2 when the Patriots host Erskine College at 7:30 p.m.

Edwards: More emphasis needs to be placed on academics
It?s exam week at Francis Marion University. Our women?s basketball team enters the break with a 4-1 record, while the men?s team is 4-2. More important, though, will be the records our players earn in the classroom this semester.

LOCAL COLLEGES: Grass takes over at Coker
Coker announced the hiring of Concordia University Wisconsin graduate Bethany Grass to coach its women?s soccer team Wednesday. Grass spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Concordia, a Lutheran instituation in Mequon, Wis. She was a four-year letterwinner at Concordia, helping the Falcons to a conference title in 1997 and received a bachelor?s of science in criminal justice and health science in 2000.

Patriot women off and running
Known as ?Run FMU,? the Francis Marion women?s basketball team hasn?t had much trouble scoring these days. Now the Patriots (4-0) will take their high-scoring show on the road when they travel to North Georgia today for their Peach Belt Conference opener.
Improvement inside benefits Coker men
After two losses in the final seconds at the Zaxby?s PBC-Conference Carolinas Clazzic, the Coker men?s basketball team has found a winning formula. Despite a 70-63 loss to defending Division II national champion Barton on Thursday night, the Cobras have played quality basketball.
COLUMN: Not a fan of life on the road
The Francis Marion University men?s basketball team travels to Dahlonega, Ga., today to take on North Georgia College. It will be our first road game of the young season. And despite Dahlonega being the ?Site of the first U.S. Gold Rush,? I am not looking forward to it.

FMU spoils Thomas’ homecoming
Thursday night?s meeting between Francis Marion and Morris College was a homecoming for Nathaniel Thomas. The 5-foot-11 Morris shooting guard and former West Florence standout led all scorers with 21 points and even had a two-handed dunk off a steal in the first half that had even Patriots fans at the Smith University Center on their feet.

A short runner in the lane by junior guard Houston Power with 15 seconds remaining lifted Francis Marion University to a season-opening 70-68 win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College in the Zaxby?s Peach Belt Conference/Conference Carolinas Clazzic on Friday night. After Power?s jumper Colby Poe missed a potential game-winning three-pointer with nine seconds left and FMU point guard Crayton Jones rebounded the miss.

LOCAL COLLEGES: Coker names new golf coach
Coker announced the hiring of UNC Pembroke tennis graduate assistant Tommy Baker as the school?s golf coach Tuesday. Baker, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., is a 2006 graduate of the UNC Pembroke, where he received a B.S. with honors in Exercise in Sports Science. He was a four-time Peach Belt Conference honor roll selection.
