Montevallo snaps FMU’s conference unbeaten streak

FLORENCE — Senior defender Cruyff Dos Remedios converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute and junior Alex Ghoja added a goal 18 minutes later to carry Montevallo to a 2-0 win over Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.
The loss snapped a nine-match unbeaten streak for Francis Marion (5-3-2, 1-1-1) in conference play and an eight-match unbeaten streak at home for the Patriots. Montevallo, in its first year in the PBC, captured its first conference win and now stands 5-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Peach Belt.
The scoreless first half featured only six combined shots. Montevallo was awarded the penalty kick at the 50:14 mark following an FMU foul in the box. Remedios took advantage of the opportunity and tallied his first goal of 2009.
Ghoja used an assist from Phil Jackson to score on a 12-yard shot at 68:12.
Cobras win on Crook’s goal
HARTSVILLE — Mike Crook’s indirect kick goal in the 48th minute gave the Coker Cobras a 2-1 win over Southern Wesleyan.
The Cobras are 8-1-2 on the year, while the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan drop to 3-3-2.
The Warriors struck first with a goal by Nicolas Luque. Coker answered in the 25th minute with a blast from Daniel Shrizad.
The Coker defense was able to hold off the Warrior attack for the remaining 42 minutes, with goalkeeper James Sweeney making three saves in the match.

Coker shut out by S. Wesleyan
HARTSVILLE — Coker failed to pick up a Homecoming win, falling to Southern Wesleyan 4-0.
The loss drops Coker 0-10 on the season, while Southern Wesleyan improves to 7-1-1.
Coker’s Carrie Hudnell had eight saves on the day, while Sierra Threatt had four saves for the Warriors.

Saints rally past FMU
FLORENCE — On the brink of falling in an 0-2 hole, first-place Flagler College rallied to win the second game and then went on to a four-game win (16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-16) over Francis Marion in PBC action.
The Patriots slip to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the PBC, while the Saints improve to 14-8 and 7-1 in their first year in the conference.
Mallory Eggert paced FMU with 12 kills and three blocks. Caitlin Simpson had eight kills in nine total attacks and compiled six blocks. Hallie Legg handed out 26 assists, while Jess O’Leary tallied 15 assists. Kelsie Deaton recorded 20 digs for her 14th career match of at least 20 digs.
