Local College Roundup: Coker men advance in conference tournament

ANDERSON — Tyler Senecal’s goal in the 64th minute gave the Coker men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over Anderson Trojans in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas tournament Tuesday.
The Coker win marks the first time the Cobras have one a play-off game in more than 20 years.
Coker improves to 11-5-2 on the season and advances to meet top-seeded Lees-McRae on Friday at 7 p.m. Earlier this season, Coker dropped a 3-1 home decision to Lees-McRae.
Eric Stiefield gave the Cobras an early 1-0 lead with a goal just five minutes into the opening half. Anderson netted the equalizer in the first three minutes of the second half behind Kevin Butler before Senecal put the game away for Coker.
FMU men fall in OT at Montevallo
MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Arran McCarthy scored 5:46 into the first overtime session to give fourth-seeded Montevallo a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Francis Marion in a quarterfinal match of the Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer tournament.
Francis Marion (11-5-3) must wait to see if the Patriots receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Ivan Juric scored the lone goal for the Patriots.Goalkeeper Clark Richeson made five saves.
FMU golfers place 12th
SAPPHIRE, N.C. — Led by a top-10 finish from sophomore Ciaran McKenna, Francis Marion placed 12th at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate.
FMU followed up Monday’s 293 score with a final-round 289 on Tuesday to finish at 582, only two strokes out of the Top 10.
Furman rallied on the back nine to win the team title by one stroke over first-round leader Kentucky.
FMU’s Kenneth Svanum fired a 72 on Tuesday and tied for 20th position at 143. Chris Couch tied for 54th and Matt Jackson tied for 64th place, while Michael Asay placed 102nd in his first collegiate tournament.
Coker volleyball edges Barton
WILSON, N.C. — The Coker volleyball team picked up their second Conference Carolinas win with a 3-2 victory over Barton College by scores of 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 25-21 and 15-11.
The win improves the Cobras to 4-25 overall and 2-14 in the conference.
Cynallyhia Indriago led the Cobras (4-25, 2-14) with 13 kills, seven digs and two aces while Kristin Teets had eight kills and 3 1/2 blocks.
