The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team competed at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on September 18-20, hosted by Georgia. Frequent rain caused the tournament to cancel the last day of the matches.
“This is first near washout that I have experienced as a head coach,” said Chris Powers. “In the few matches we played, we continued to look very solid on the doubles court. In singles, I think the excellent competition level exposed some weaknesses we need to work on in practice this week. The sooner we believe in ourselves in the big points, the sooner we take the next step toward our season goals.”
On the first day of competition, Ernesto Ramos was defeated by Eugeny Selasarev of Gardner-Webb 6-3, 7-6 in the Division I singles. Also competing in the Division I singles, Matt Gordon was defeated by Georgia’s Christian Vitulli, 6-3, 6-1.
Dmitry Vlaskin lost a close match to Stetson’s Cesare Gallo 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the Division II singles.
Saturday would be a better day for the Chants as Plamen Tzvetkov defeated Chris Swanteson of Stetson, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the Division II singles. But, Reno Airaldi of USC- Upstate defeated Alex Funkhouser 4-6, 6-1 (6) also in the Division II singles.
In doubles action, the Chants were fairly successful throughout the tournament. Dorian Sovic/Alex Funkhouser defeated Charlie Jones/Andy Pulido of Vanderbilt, 8-0. Continuing their success in doubles, Vlaskin/Tzvetkov defeated Michael Gaerthoeffner/Jordan Smith (Memphis), 8-6.
