Clemson’s Padgett on U.S. team
Clemson sprinter Travis Padgett was named to the U.S. track and field team competing at the Beijing Olympics next month. The 21-year-old Padgett, who’s a junior, finished fourth in the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic trials earlier this month.

Clemson bulks up training staff
Clemson has added trainers for its men’s basketball and baseball teams. Jermile Brooks takes over as athletic trainer for the men’s basketball team, while Travis Johnston will work with the baseball program.

Clemson commit has busy summer
Milton Jennings hasn’t stopped traveling this summer. The Clemson commitment is on a Myrtle Beach-based travelling AAU team and has also participated in some NBA players workout camps, most notably LeBron James and Amare Stoudamire.

Hamlin named to Thorpe list
Clemson defensive backs Michael Hamlin and Chris Chancellor are both on the preseason watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s top defensive back.
2 Gamecocks, 2 Tigers named to Watch List
Two Clemson Tigers and Two South Carolina Gamecocks were named to the 2008 Thorpe Award Watch List, given to the country’s best secondary player. Clemson’s Chris Chancellor and Lamar product Michael Hamlin and USC’s Captain Munnerlyn and Emmanuel Cook all received the honor.

McDaniel allowed to stay with Tigers
Clemson coach Tommy Bowden announced Monday that DeAndre McDaniel, the sophomore safety charged with assault of a high and aggravated nature on his girlfriend, will be allowed to practice with the team.

Four Clemson Tigers up for Maxwell Award
Six Clemson football players are listed as candidates for two awards announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Monday. Club President Ron Jaworski announced 75 candidates from around the country for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards, respectively.
Clemson’s Kyle Parker honored
Clemson baseball player Kyle Parker has been named a freshman all-American. The Tigers’ first-year player joined Miami pitcher Chris Hernandez as Atlantic Coast Conference players chosen by Baseball America for its freshman first-team on Monday.
Clemson’s Padgett comes up short
Clemson junior Travis Padgett missed the U.S. Olympic team by a one hundredth of a second in the 100m dash, finishing fourth at the U.S. Trials. By virtue of the fourth place finish, Padgett will in all likelihood head to Beijing, China in August as part of a strong 4x100m relay team.

Clemson athletes feel coach’s departure
Star Clemson vaulter Mitch Greeley is focused squarely on his chance this weekend to make the U.S. Olympic team. Part of him, though, can’t help reflecting back on the Tigers upcoming change. Longtime Clemson men’s track and field coach Bob Pollock announced his retirement last week.

Clemson’s Ray Ray McElrathbey (MAC’il-rath-bee) says he’s transferring to Howard. McElrathbey is the football player who earned accolades for taking custody of his younger brother while going to college.

Clemson’s Pollock announces retirement
Clemson’s longtime track coach has retired after a season in which he was accused of depositing money from campus track and field events into a personal account. Bob Pollock spent 20 years leading the men’s track and field program and will leave the Tigers after the U.S. Olympic Trials early next month.
Clemson’s Harper on Unitas list
Clemson’s Cullen Harper is a preseason candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award given each year since 1987 to the college football’s top senior quarterback will be presented Dec. 5 in Baltimore.

Clemson beats Georgia Tech 10-4
Ben Paulsen broke a 3-3 tie with a grand-slam home run in the seventh inning and Clemson went on to rout Georgia Tech 10-4 on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament.
