Coastal Carolina and Clemson will meet sooner than expected on the gridiron.
The two schools finalized a contract to play Oct. 31, 2009 at Memorial Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two schools.
The schools also will play in Death Valley during the 2014 season.
The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Coastal coach David Bennett, who was a graduate assistant under Danny Ford with the Tigers from 1984 to 1986.
The Chants are expected to earn $300,00 for the game.
“This is about the experience for our players, our coaches, our fans and our alumni,” Coastal athletic director Moose Koegel said Wednesday during a press conference. “That’s a dream that we all have to be able to play those type of games.”
Coastal will play its first Division I opponent this year when it opens up at Penn State. Coastal will get $450,000 for that game.
In addition to playing Clemson in ’09, the Chants will play at Kent State to open the season.
The Tigers also announced plans for future non-conference opponents. The 2010 non-conference schedule will begin a run of seven straight years in which Clemson will play at least two SEC schools on its non-conference schedule.
Clemson will meet Auburn in 2010 and 2011, Vanderbilt in 2012 and 2013, Georgia in 2013 and 2014 and Mississippi in 2015 and 2016.
