A member of the West Florence High School Marching Knights will be among high school band all-stars from across the country marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City.

Through the years, the football series between the South Florence Bruins and West Florence Knights has seen plenty of slobberknockers.

Newberry coaches always have seen the potential in Brandon Bostick. And after two years of struggles, the receiver is finally living up to it on the field.

After his team’s 56-7 loss at the hands of Sumter, West Florence football coach Trey Woodberry huddled his players and gave them some encouraging words. It’s not an easy task rebuilding a program that lost 31 seniors from last year’s campaign, including four players who signed to continue their careers at Division I college programs.

Following two back-to-back losses against Sumter and Carolina Forest, the Hartsville Lady Red Foxes varsity volleyball team fought off the West Florence Knights for a win on Tuesday night. The Foxes record improves to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in region.

West Florence High School has been selected to pilot the S.C. College Application Week Program during Monday through Oct. 16.

West Florence, South Florence and Hartsville competed in the Region-4A swim meet Saturday.

Before Thursday night’s contest against Hartsville, Wilson defensive back Jeremiah Gandy said one of the two teams’ defense would make big plays. Unfortunately for Gandy, it was the Red Foxes defense that came up huge.

After a dismal performance in its season opener against city rival South Florence, West Florence coach Trey Woodberry expected a better performance Thursday night when his Knights hosted Camden.

The streak is over. Junior quarterback Kaleb Griffin and the South Florence Bruins made sure of that. Griffin threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score as South ended a nine-game losing streak to city rival West Florence with a 41-7 victory Friday at Memorial Stadium.

For once, the South Florence Bruins have a decisive numbers advantage over their cross-town rivals at West Florence. Not in terms of players on the roster, but in returning talent.

The Knights started practicing for the 2009 football season Friday.

The dog days of summer gave way to start of a familiar fall ritual Friday as high school football began anew. First practices were held across the Pee Dee and the state beginning early in the morning and lasting throughout the day.

West Florence High School graduated the Class of 2009 during the first of three Florence Dist. 1 ceremonies Saturday morning at the Florence Civic Center.

Brice Leggett, an 18-year-old West Florence High School senior, is ending his senior year on a high note. Leggett is one of four members who form the up-and-coming band What About Wednesday.
