EDITORIAL: Pilots deserve thanks for Veterans Day event

Three days before Veterans Day I stood at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery and witnessed once again the solemn and time-honored ceremony of the changing of the guard. That was followed by three consecutive wreath-laying ceremonies, equally solemn.

Florence veteran searches for lost medal

For U.S. Air Force veteran Rocky Gannon of Florence, Veterans Day 2008 started out nearly perfect. Sometime during the course of the Veterans Park events, Gannon lost the Distinguished Flying Cross off of his jacket. He earned the medal during the Vietnam War while flying a twin-engine DC3.

One local veteran isn’t feeling very appreciated on this Veterans’ Day. Josh Dillard of Seneca is in the Army Reserves and served for 16 months in Afghanistan. He dislocated his shoulder and had his hand crushed while there.
