Darlington High School held its Fall Sports Athletic Banquet on Wednesday to honor the school’s athletes.

The Carolina Academy girls varsity tennis team has advanced to the semifinals of the South Carolina Inde-pendent School Association state playoffs after sweeping St. Andrews Academy.

The Francis Marion University women’s tennis doubles team of Tereza Sykorova and Sabina Baberadova and the men’s duo of Oshada Wijemanne and Dilshod Sharifi both advanced to their respective championship matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships before falling on Friday.

The Carolina Academy’s varsity girls tennis team has claimed the regional championship after finishing a second undefeated season with an 8-1 victory over Pee Dee Academy.

The Carolina Academy varsity girls tennis team defeated Pee Dee Academy 5-4 in an Oct. 7 home matchup.

The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team competed at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on September 18-20, hosted by Georgia. Frequent rain caused the tournament to cancel the last day of the matches.

“It’s going to be a rebuilding year,” said Brian Howell, tennis coach for Hartsville High School.

“We’ve got a big task ahead of us because Hartsville girls’ tennis has done so well in the last six, seven, eight years,” Howell said.

The Carolina Academy varsity girls tennis team recently defeated Robert E. Lee Academy in an away match and Williamsburg Academy in a home game.

The Francis Marion University women’s and men’s tennis teams are ranked fifth and 18th respectively in the final 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II Top 40 national polls released recently.  Several Patriot players were also included in the singles and doubles rankings.

Francis Marion sophomore Oshada Wijemanne has been named the 2009 recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Player to Watch award for the NCAA Division II’s Southeast Region.

Despite putting up a valiant effort, seventh-ranked Francis Marion fell to top-ranked and unbeaten BYU-Hawaii 5-1, Wednesday in Sweet 16 action at the Division II Women’s Tennis Championships.
