It was a long time coming, but Darlington County and Society Hill town officials broke ground Saturday morning on the site where a new public library will be built for Society Hill.

Society Hill Catfish Festival offers food, family and fun.

The Town of Society Hill will celebrate its Annual Catfish Festival beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Two men thought to be responsible for a home invasion, a pistol-whipping and the lockdown of schools in Darlington were arrested Friday after a brief manhunt, Darlington County Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Locklair said.

The suspicious death of a 64-year-old Darlington woman was ruled a homicide Thursday by a jury of inquest. Mary Ann O’Neal of Darlington was found dead in her home near Society Hill on May 9, Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said.

The Taste of Society Hill returns and will once again be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 17 at the historic Japonica Hall, home of Michal and Dick Baird, in Society Hill. The Taste is a popular event that brings people from all over the Pee Dee to this historic town. Proceeds from the event are used to beautify the town.

A new public library for Society Hill moved a step closer to becoming a reality Monday when Darlington County Council unanimously agreed to accept a loan for as much as $787,200 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency.
