Nichols ‘Soil Soldiers’ former homes removed
After standing for 75 years, the former housing project of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Nichols has been demolished and removed. Flattened after being condemned because of rotting wood and a severe infestation of bees, the log cabins that once housed one of the elements of President Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal,” the cabins housed men who worked to fight soil erosion along the Lumber River.

Peruvian, walking for hope, stops in Marion County
Teach. Inspire. Empower. This is what Peruvian native Julio Montoya hopes to do with his Hope Walk 2008. Montoya’s walk helps disabled Peruvians get prostheses. His walk, from Boston, Mass. to Miami, Fla., is called Camino al Futuro, or Walk to the Future. Monetary donations made while he is walking help individuals with disabilities get wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and any other needed equipment, Montoya said.

Heinz looking for suppliers, commission is told
The Heinz company, which will be putting a plant in Florence County, is looking for suppliers, Frank Jones told Marion County Economic Development Commissioners, and the Russell Stover building is back on the market.

Evening of fashion, fun helps to raise funds
An evening of fashion, fun and inspiration, conducted annually that helps to raise money for youth traveling over the summer for ACT-SO program, did not disappoint the audience at St. Paul Baptist Church in Mullins.

Marion County schools prepare for new leaders
Near the end of each school year officials work to get administrators in place for the next year. Marion County officials will be welcoming a few changes in their schools, but most administrators remain in their same positions.
People can still make the difference
Kudos to all who cared enough to sound off when Marion County’s environment was threatened recently by plans to spread bio-solids, treated sewage, on farmland.
Time to reflect
As the school year ends, the summer looms with great joy, excitement and activity. It is always a good time to reflect, and revisit the successes and challenges of last school year. There have been major successes in instruction, training, planning and implementation of several programs.

Marion County School Board appoints local members
Trustees of the Marion County Board of Education appointed board members to the county’s three local school district boards Tuesday. The seven-member school district boards in Marion County are Marion School District 1, Marion School District 2 and Marion School District 7. Also, the board passed a resolution honoring Jimmy Vereen, who was recently honored as a volunteer with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Pee Dee.
