Marion City Council met on Nov. 10

After an executive session, Marion City Council members appointed Patricia Speth as Municipal Judge. Speth will be sworn in at 4 p.m. on July 22 in the Marion County Courthouse on Main Street.

Marion City Council members had a special meeting and public hearing this past week to discuss ordinances to raise rates and fees and to adopt a 2009-10 budget.

Marion City Council interviewed five candidates for the city judge position, which came open after Judge Williams Seals was selected by legislators to fill a seat on the district court.

Main Street Marion, Historic Marion Revitalization Association had its annual meeting earlier this month. The group is planning its annual fundraiser, an auction, at 7 p.m. on May 22.

City of Marion Mayor Rodney Berry presided over his first city council meeting inside a packed council chamber at City Hall May 12. Though Berry said in his opening prayer he wanted the city to come together, his first vote turned out to be a divisive one.

Marion County Council will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday and Marion City Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Both meetings will be in City Hall on Main Street.

Rodney Berry and Betsy Atkinson took their oaths of office as newly-elected City of Marion officials Monday afternoon.

The Marion County Election Commission voted Saturday to deny protests and uphold the election of Rodney Berry as the City of Marion’s mayor and Betsy Bryant Atkinson as Marion City District 3 Council Member.

The Marion County Election Commission will meet at noon Saturday in the Beeson building to hear protests lodged by Nancy Harrelson and Ronald Davis, who were candidates in Tuesday’s Marion city elections.

The lawsuit between the former mayor of Marion, and Marion City Council Members remains on the court dockets, and could be dismissed.

Marion City Council members paused for a moment of silence to remember the late Mayor Bobby Gerald and then began reviewing the city’s business Tuesday night.
