Horry County school district public information officer Teal Britton said money from the penny tax will first be used to pay current debt and the next projects will likely be renovating or building elementary schools.

For more than 700 days, the country listened to the many presidential candidate tax plan proposals.  But, the game of politics can cloud the message.

Incumbent Luke Rankin, R-Myrtle Beach, looked set to earn a fifth term in the S.C. Senate in District 33, overcoming a Demo cratic challenger for the second time. Rankin, 46, pulled nearly three quarters of the votes away from two-time challenger Jara Uzenda, 62, a contractor.

Three incumbents facing challengers for their seats on Horry County Council were leading Tuesday night with more than 95 percent of precincts reporting. But Democratic Councilman Marion Foxworth’s lead had narrowed to 91 votes of 9,447 cast, preliminary results showed.

Horry County school board Chairman Will Garland said he was shocked and surprised at the number of people who voted for the tax, but said it was a credit to how well the school district, Horry Georgetown Technical College and Coastal Carolina University got the message out.

The polls opened at 7 a.m. across the Grand Strand Tuesday morning with some folks standing in line for hours.

In addition to Ketner, speakers at the fish fry included Myrtle Beach councilman Mike Chestnut, Horry County councilman Marion Foxworth, council chair Liz Gilland, and local NAACP President Mickey James.

Workers at the Horry County Republican and Democratic headquarters are busy in the final hours leading up to the general election.
