The number of homeless students in Horry County is on the rise. Carolyn Chestnut, chief officer for student services, said there are 89 more homeless students this year than last.

“The legislature has got to remember that the schools have to have enough money to function so that we can produce the type of citizens that we need in the state of South Carolina.“ Myrtle Beach’s Bunny Beckham.

Jeff Riddle, Chief Finance and Human Resources officer for Horry County schools said at the request of the school board, the finance department already has long range goals in place for the budget.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol started a driving under the influence team in January in response to the record number of road deaths in Horry County in 2007. The team has increased DUI cases by 77 percent over last year.

Representatives from the school district, including Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Elsberry, Will Garland, Kay Loftus, Harvey Eisner, and Eddie Rodelsperger were joined by Dr. Marilyn Fore, with Horry Georgetown Technical College to inform voters about the question that will be on the November ballot.
