There is a rich football tradition at Hartsville High School. The Red Foxes have won three state championships and they’ve played for five others over the years. Coach Jeff Calabrese might wonder sometimes how many students at the school know about that history, though.

Under coach Jeff Calabrese, Hartsville’s football squad has been known as an offensive juggernaut. Little has been spoken about the RedFoxes’ defense, causing the unit to enter Memorial Stadium last Thursday with a serious chip on its shoulder.

The Hartsville High School swim team competed in its first meet Sept. 8 at the Sumter YMCA. At least three swimmers beat their previous best times.

Before Thursday night’s contest against Hartsville, Wilson defensive back Jeremiah Gandy said one of the two teams’ defense would make big plays. Unfortunately for Gandy, it was the Red Foxes defense that came up huge.

The Hartsville Red Foxes have rolled over opponents in their first three football games, outscoring them by an average of 40-24. The Wilson Tigers held off South Florence in a 40-30 shootout last Friday.

A Hartsville High School assistant football coach and social studies teacher was arrested for solicitation.

Rain did not deter high school football fans on Friday night, and the Red Foxes did not disappoint, defeating their cross county rivals the Darlington Falcons 31-14 in Darlington.

Claire Brown, a freshman at Hartsville High School, participated in the Azalea Invitational Golf Tournament Aug. 11-12 in Charleston. The tournament is sanctioned by the S.C. Junior Golf Association and hosted by Beth Daniels and her home course, The Country Club of Charleston.

It’s hard to hold a conversation with Albert Haynesworth without thinking about labels. Troublemaker. The guy who stomped on Andre Gurode. Injury-prone. Maybe a bit of a slacker. The $100 million man. The next Reggie White or Bruce Smith.

The Hartsville Red Foxes faithful that packed into a muggy Kelleytown Stadium Friday night went home very happy, as their squad won the season opening, big play trading contest, 56-38.
