Gamecocks to open with Southern Miss next year

South Carolina has yet to play a home football game, yet plans are shaping up for its future schedules. The school announced Wednesday that the Gamecocks would open the 2010 season against Southern Miss on Sept. 2, a Thursday night game to be telecast by ESPN.

Gamecocks’ defense carries them to opening victory

Steve Spurrier wasn’t going to complain about his South Carolina defense’s start to the season, even if it’s not the way he most wants to win. Brian Maddox had a short touchdown run for the Gamecocks’ only score while the defense shut down Russell Wilson to beat North Carolina State 7-3 on Thursday night.

North Carolina State couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the season. First, there’s the chance to showcase the program and all-conference quarterback Russell Wilson to a national TV audience. Then there’s the opponent: Steve Spurrier and South Carolina, the same team that shut out the Wolfpack to open last season.

USC’s Geathers arrested

South Carolina defensive end Clifton Geathers is facing several charges following an incident at a nightclub. Multiple media outlets reported Sunday that Columbia police charged Geathers, who played at Carvers Bay, with public drunkeness, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
