Incumbent Republican Sheriff Kenney Boone will continue serving Florence County after he raked in more than 23,000 votes Tuesday and defeated Democratic opponent Jimmy Gregg.

Florence County incumbent treasurer Dean Fowler will remain in office after Tuesday’s election.

The Florence mayoral candidates, Stephen Wukela and Rocky Pearce, spent the day Monday shaking a lot of hands. Both Pearce and Wukela spent the last minutes before the big day, trying to reach every voter they could.

So far, 10,000 absentee ballots have come through Florence County. In fact, officials said this election has the most registered voters Florence, the state and even the country has ever seen.

It’s been quite an interesting campaign this year to see who gets chosen to be mayor for the next four years in Florence.

Toy Johnson, 48, is owner of Toy Barber Stylist in downtown Florence and will be voting for the first time in his life.

Residents of the city without a lake were fairly evenly divided on their presidential choices, but solidly against a proposal to sell alcohol in restaurants on Sundays.

Florence County voting machines are expected to record well over 7,000 absentee ballots through Monday, said Steve Love, interim county elections and voter registration director.

There are two open seats for Florence City Council.

Former Florence County sheriff Jimmy Gregg is running against incumbent Kenney Boone, who he endorsed for the position four years ago before retiring.

Among the choices for voters on Nov. 4 are Florence County Treasurer — voted on county wide — and for Florence County Council seat for District Four — representing the Timmonsville area of the county.

I know that Mr. Kenney Boone has done a fantastic job as sheriff.
